WATER RESOURCES AND AGRICULTURE IN WESTERN INDIA

POTENTIAL ADAPTATION MEASURES

Lessons learnt

During a recent field visit to the Bisalpur Dam and its irrigation command area in November 2017, it was informed by the farmers in the command area of the Bisalpur dam that in recent years the yield of mustard crop has significantly reduced because of rise in temperatures. This could be either because of increased aridity or reduced soil moisture or increase in soil temperature or a combination of all these factors. This issue shall be investigated in due course of study.

Importance and relevance of adaptation

Of course, adaption measures are one of the main solutions to cope with the climate change impacts. However, the climate change impacts shall be assessed based on the findings of the study and accordingly suitable adaption measures shall be suggested, whether to increase the capacity of the dam and to change the crop scheme by suggesting less water intensive crops in the command area.

Pros and cons or cost-benefit analysis of climate adaptation

This aspect shall be covered after the finalization of the adaptation measures and accordingly in view of the climate change, the cost-benefit analysis shall be carried-out.

Policy aspects

After completion of the case study, a stakeholder workshop/ user interaction workshop can be organized in the study area (depending on funds availability), in which user groups, stakeholders and policy makers can be invited. Policy aspects can be discussed and any policy related issues can be identified after interactions and discussions among these groups.
